Number of Sales: 5.1 Million

Released in 1971, Fireball is the fifth studio album released by the band. It marked the band’s MK II line-up’s second studio album.

Originally recorded between September 1970 and June 1971, it was the first album ranked number one on the UK Albums chart, as well as ranked number one in seven separate charts in different countries. Although it has sold more than one million copies in the US, the album has no Platinum certification but 4x Gold certifications in total.

There were two different versions of the album when it was released. When the band released a 7-track album in its all US/Canadian/Japanese and European versions, the only thing that distinguished them from each other is that the European version was released with Demon’s Eye, while the US/Canadian/Japanese version was released with Strange Kind of Woman.

However, Fireball is the fifth highest-selling Deep Purple album of all time, with over 5.1 million sales.

4. Perfect Strangers

 

Number of Sales: 5.5 Million

There is another album Deep Purple sold over 5 million. Marking the fourth highest-selling album of all time, Perfect Strangers has had over 5.5 million sales worldwide.

Released shortly after Purple reunited in 1984, Perfect Strangers was is the eleventh studio album of the band. It is considered the most successful album of the band’s MK II line-up. Consisting of 8 tracks in total, the album has had mixed reviews from critics.

Focusing on the album’s certifications, Purple received 2x Platinum certifications separately. In the Swiss Albums chart, the album ranked number one, as well as ranked number 17 on the Billboard US chart and number 6 on the UK Albums chart.

3. Burn

 

Number of Sales: 8.2 Million

Released in the year the band took a hiatus in 1974, Burn is a third of the list with 8.2 million sales and the first to feature then-unknown David Coverdale on vocals. It also featured Glenn Hughes on vocals and bass.

It was one of those successful albums of the band during the band’s first era, as it gained five separate Gold certifications. The album was ranked number one in several countries in 1974.

Number of Sales: 13.2 Million

Marking the band’s fourth studio album, Deep Purple In Rock is the first studio album recorded by the band’s legendary Mark II line-up.

Ranked at number 143 on Billboard’s US 200 chart, the album was number 4 on the UK Albums chart, as it spent time on the chart for over a year. Being one of the most influential albums in the rock scene, the album has had incredibly positive reviews.

Deep Purple In Rock was the second on the list, with 13.2 million sales.

1. Machine Head

 

Number of Sales: 36.7 Million

With 36.7 million sales worldwide, Machine Head is the highest-selling Deep Purple album of all time. The album is widely considered a career-changing album in the rock music industry.

The album has an interesting story for itself. In this album, Deep Purple wanted to create something different but closer as a sound to their live shows and hired the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio for recording, and block-booked the Montreux Casino as a venue. Unfortunately, the casino burned to the ground during a Frank Zappa concert. As a result, the band decided to book the Grand Hotel and got its sound perfectly. After all those events, particularly the casino fire, Deep Purple‘s chart-breaking song Smoke On The Water came down.

Ranked at number 1 in the UK charts, the album was number 7 on Billboard’s UK 200 chart. It was also ranked number one on seven charts, including Australian Albums, German Albums, French Albums, The Official Finnish Charts, Dutch Albums, Canada Top Albums/CDs, and Danish Albums Chart.

  1. I find it hard to believe that the double album live, Made in Japan, did not make the list. It’s one of the best live rock albums hands down for sure.
