Jason Newsted Recalls Metallica’s Lars Ulrich Disrespectful Behavior: “I Was Fucking Livid!”

Jason Newsted Recalls Metallica's Lars Ulrich's Disrespectful Behavior To Him

Former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted has recalled the time that the band’s co-founder/drummer Lars Ulrich acted disrespectfully for him and blasted him by saying that he was livid at the time.

As you know, Jason Newsted has joined the heavy metal band Metallica in 1986 as a bass player. They’ve released 11 albums in total together. When the time has become to 2001, Newsted announced his departure from the band, and Robert Trujillo became the new bassist of the band.

When the band released its fourth studio album in 1988, it was an incident that angered Jason Newsted. Lars Ulrich told the record label when they sent the album that they have to turn down the bass before they listen to the album. It pissed Jason off.

Recently, the former bassist of the band has recalled those times and expressed how he felt like the first time he heard the final mix of the album. He said that he was livid.

“I was fucking livid,” Newsted told Metal Hammerr. “Are you kidding me? I was ready for throats, man!

“No, I was out of my head because I really thought I did well. And I thought I played how I was supposed to play…”

Newsted Reveals Ulrich’s Disrespectful Words

Continuing his words about the issue, Newsted told that James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich made those records using only drums and guitars. He also revealed that Ulrich told the record label that they have to turn bass down before they listen to it.

“Lars and James were the original garage band duo, as far as that goes,” he continues.

“They always made the records that way, from ‘No Life ‘Til Leather,’ it was Lars and James, guitar and drums.

“On the original ‘No Life ‘Til Leather’ cassette – if you happen to ever see a real copy or a photo of a real copy – in Lars’ handwriting, in ink pen, on the label of the cassette, ‘Turn bass down on stereo.’ On No Life ‘Til Leather!”

“They mixed it how it was supposed to be mixed – there’s the bass and there’s the guitar from all the way back.

“But Lars didn’t want it because it messed with his drums somehow, so when he sends the demo out to fucking Combat Records and wherever, ‘Turn the bass down before you even listen to this.’

“Before you even get it going, just turn the bass down. Right from the get-go. Before you even start.”

Newsted Says Metallica Is The Most Successful Metal Band Of All Time

Concluding his words, Newsted stated that his former band Metallica is the most successful metal band of all time.

“That’s where he’s been his whole goddamn life, so why would it be any different when it came to?

“They madee ‘Kill ‘Em All’ that way, they made ‘Ride the Lightning’ that way, they made ‘Master of Puppets’ that way, all of them.

“Those two guys in a room [mimics drum beats and playing], that’s the way it always happened. For the most successful metal band of all time. So you argue with this shit? I’m not really sure.”
